can you like not rank down from 40 in halo 3?

like ima 40 in lone wovles i just had like 3 bad games ina row and havnt ranked down and i signed out and shut off my xbox and it was still a 40 so am i still a 40? or will it rank me down? or can you like not rank down? at 40
