Every time I try to play Halo 3 on Xbox live it disconnects me before the

But when i play Call of Duty 4 it works just fine.

Try clearing your Xbox360's cache by:
Go to the Xbox Dashboard, select the System Blade, and select Memory.
Highlight the HD symbol and press Y.
Press X, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X, X.

Then just restart Halo and re-download the update. Hopefully it will work.
FYI this will delete all of your updates, meaning that you will have to update again for every game you play.
