Halo 1 Belly of the beast question?

I'm stuck on the "belly of the beast" level, and i've been trapped for an hour. I got to the top floor and this lit-up thing said "press X to open shuttle bay door" and i pressed X on my controller and i thnk something way down below opened up, and i had to fight a few more bad guys. now what? im absolutely lost...
