Halo 3 Odst Multiplayer question?

i just got a xbox and i wanted to get halo 3 but halo 3 odst just came out and i was gonna get it instead of halo 3 but i have a question, since i haven't owned halo 3 and don't have any achievements for halo 3 can i still get the armors or will i just get the default ones?

i think you can play it and earn the armor if not you have to get the halo 3 just to be safe
