Halo 3 Xbox Live help please!!?

How do I set up a multi-player game? All I can do it set up a game and start it but I cant find other peoples games and if anybody can join mine they havent. Help please!
EDIT: and yet, I bought 3 months of golden membership for Xbox live, and I am on the right profile for xbox live.
EDIT: the two bottom posts were not helpful.
best post goes to the person who tells me where to go besides matchmaking -- since all that is is where you create a game

wow dude in the main menu go to matchmaking and it finds a game for u to join. now if u want to customize ur game u go to custom but you have to have willing friends to join.

make sure you also have a hard drive because in coop games it wont let you join do multiplayer coop w/o a hd, im not sure bout multiplayer against people though. But yeah i would try and see if you can join ranked lone wolf or social big team slayer and if that doesn't work see what could be keeping you from it. You could also have NAT problems if you're using a router.
