I have had halo 3 for a couple months and I still suck at it. I take advice from my friends, who are pretty good (ones a 45 the other a 38) and for some reason I still suck. All they tell me is battle rifle, battle rifle, battle rifle...and Im just not very good with that weapon. It seems like everytime I pick one up I get owned by another player who has one. Is there anyway to still be good at halo and not be a good with a battle rifle?

How do you get better at Halo 3?

For me the most important thing to learn is being unpredictable. A good player will be thinking what you're going to do next. This is tough to teach but just try to think ahead.
For example if you walk through an area which has explosives at the exit, a good player will predict your movements and destroy the explosives on your exit, either killing you or heavily decreasing your shield giving them the upper hand.
If you don't feel comfortable with a BR (which is undoubtably the most important weapon for a good player) then use the assault rifle and a close range weapon (1. Shotgun, 2. Sword, 3. Mauler [needs a beat down directly afterwards]).
With this tactic (of many) try to stay our of large areas and keep an escape route with cover available. It is likely (should your opponent be using BR's) that they will be the initiator in a battle. Find cover while firing some shots of your assault rifle, crouch and wait for them to come and finish you off. Dont stand too close to an entrance because a well placed grenade can now kill you because you've already taken damage, wait for the grenades and keep an eye on your radar (another really important skill) stay crouched (this keeps you off radar), change to your close range weapon and approach the entrance when you spot the mark coming for you. If you haven't taken damage from the grenades there is also a chance you might have recovered some health by now, but with a strong close range weapon this isnt always neccesary. Just as he is about to show himself surprise him with the close range weapon he didnt know you had and hopefully you end up with a +1 k/d ratio

Yes you can still be good without using the battle rifle here are some tips that have worked for me when i sucked:
1 Always go for the big powerful weapons: rocket launcher, shotgun, sword, brute shot, sniper rifle (even if you are not good so the enemy won't use it against you)
2 Always stay inside, keep moving but try to stay inside all the time.
3 The assault rifle is one of the best weapons that's why they bring it back from Halo 1, never discard this weapon.
4 Always run towards the enemy you want to kill, if you start going back or trying to escape you will most certainly die.
5 When you want to kill someone try jumping over him you will have advantage.
6 As i say in 4 when you run towards him keep shooting no matter what weapon you are using until he is in range so you can melee him.
7 Always try to go for the camo and overshield.
8 Spare no expense on grenades always throw grenades, specially when you are about to die you might get lucky and get kill from the grave.
9 Go for the machine gun and vehicles (the only reason to go outside)you most certainly die but not without killing at least 2 guys.
10 Don't use double weapons they don't let you use grenades and most combinations suck.
11 When you play on team doubles, team slayer, multi team, etc. Always stay with someone else never go solo.
12 Know the map you are playing in, where is every item, where you can hide an assassinate someone.
13 Adjust your sensibility so you can move fast but still able to control the, turn the vibration off it distracts you and makes you less accurate.
14 Remember to use your equipment (bubble shield, power drain, gravity lift, etc)
15 An to finish this as any sport, science or hobby the most important thing to to is PRACTICE, try playing at least one hour a day and even though you can still be good without using the battle rifle it is still one of the best and most easy to find weapons so try practicing with this weapon, also these are the best weapons on the game try practicing with this also: shotgun, rocket launcher, assault rifle, sniper, brute shot, mauler(brute pistol), carbine, plasma grenade so you can stick it to them.
Ps: This is just a theory of mine, but i like using the elite since i think is harder for other players to locate the head.

I have been there. Getting owned by a guy with the same gun even though I started shooting first! It was irritating at times.
What I have learned from that experience is not to start shooting unless I have an advantage over that guy. First observe if you have an advantage over him, if so then go ahead and shoot him. If not, then first create the advantage, it may be throwing a grenade at him and then start shooting him because the grenade will deplete his shield and he will be very vulnerable. Or may be approach him and melee him if hi is not aware of you. Or jump while shooting at him, because that will make it hard for him to aim at your head. . . . the list continues
The other thing is, don't start shooting at some guy unless you are sure that he doesn't have a place to hide and regenerate his health. Because if he succeeds in hiding then you lost your surprise advantage and he knows where you are and his friends also may know that. . . If you see a guy moving out of a building, wait for him until you are sure you will kill him before he makes it back.
The other thing is, operate with a group. Usually in two or three. If you have a friend then stick with each other and shoot at the same guy if possible. You will kill the guy very fast that way. And you will also be able to cover each others back.
I agree with your friends, the BR(Battle Rifle) is a very good gun. It is well suited for most environments. But the other guns have their own advantage over BR in other cases. So use that advantage if you have the gun.
I am sure you know all these. But these are the things that helped me to become an average player. But there are lots of other tactics that are very helpful.

Well they're right lol. BR is one of the best weapons in the game. I suggest changing your sensitivity to perhaps 3, so BR'ing and using the Sniper is easier. Change to Bumper Jumper as your controller layout, practice that in Campaign mode.
Learning to use the BR is pretty much your key to getting in the higher levels. Play some SWAT or MLG (I suggest SWAT, MLG is full of second accounts) to practice your BR shots.
Remember, practice makes perfect.
