In Lone Wolves in halo 3 i'm currently a staff captain how much exp do i need

Well, you'll need a lot. You'll need 600 exp. points just to reach a Grade 4 Captain if you choose to take that route. However, if you get to skill level 30, you'll only need 200 exp. points to make it to Major. I found that it was much easier to get to the required skill level rather than just accumulating exp. until I was promoted. You might want to try the same path.
