Playing Halo 3 online. Do i have to buy new maps?

Do i have to buy the new multiplayer maps for halo 3 if i want to play ranked matches? I have never played online, and i didnt know if i would have to purchase any of the new ones. If so, which ones do i have to buy?

One map pack is free its the first one bungie released, the second the legendary map is not free, there is a single map that was released Cold Storage that is free, and there is half of the mythic map pack that is not free. You need them however you may play them every blue moon.

For some playlists, you don't need any of the non-free maps. But for most, you need the Legendary Map Pack. Here is a list of the Map Packs and maps they consist of:

Heroic Map Pack (Free):
-Stand Off
-Rats Nest
-Foundry

Legendary Map Pack(600 MS Points):
-Avalanche
-Ghost Town
-Blackout

Cold Storage Map (Free):
-Cold Storage

Mythic Map Pack (600 MS points):
-Assembly
-Sand Box (biggest map ever)
-Orbital
