What does it mean to strafe in Halo 3?

What does it mean and how do you do it? For example when a sniper is trying to snipe you someone told me to strafe left and right what does that mean?

My sir, just to let you know, strafing does exist outside the world of Halo. >.> With my annoyance towards Halo out of the way, strafing is moving left and right. Don't move the Right analog stick, and just tilt your Left analog stick back and forth between the left and right side. Strafing means sidestepping.
