What is the picture next to my name in Halo 3?

On the social playlists on Halo 3 on the left hand side of my name I have a picture, mine is of 3 yellow dows, what is this and how can I change it?

I'm not talking about the rank on the right hand side of my name.

Your emblem? Go to any out-of-game menu (EG: The main menu or the lobby), hit start, go over to settings, then choose appearance. There you can change your armor permutations as well as your emblem. You can change the shape under 'emblem' and the color of both that and your armor perm under 'colors'.
