I’ve suddenly been hit with this crazy wave of nostalgia for the days of computer clubs. I’ve been itching to play good old CS 1.6 again in 2026, but I have absolutely no idea where to even start. The game is a total dinosaur-does it even run properly on modern computers and the new Windows without constant crashes and mouse glitches? And is there still any active online play, or are the servers just full of bots and three old-timers who haven’t left the game in the last twenty years?

I thought no one played it anymore, but it still attracts thousands of people to its servers. Furthermore, enthusiasts have adapted it for modern systems, so it runs seamlessly on Windows 10 or 11. In my opinion, the best standalone client is currently available at https://csget.me/ . The servers there are well-selected based on ping. But, once the Turkish server came up first with the lowest ping, and the voice chat there was chaotic. By the time I silenced all the noisy Turks, my head was throbbing. For the most part, though, everything’s fine with them.
